Seasonal Flu

Flu viruses are spread in respiratory droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. The viruses are usually spread from person to person. People can also become infected when they touch something with flu viruses on it, then touch their nose or mouth.

Healthy adults can infect others one day before their flu symptoms develop as well as after they become sick. Some people can be infected with the flu yet have no symptoms. During this time, they can still spread the virus to others.

Although it is impossible to know if you have the flu based on symptoms alone, the flu virus infects people suddenly with body aches, fever, and respiratory symptoms. The illness is spread during the flu season, typically November through April in the Northern Hemisphere. Your doctor can perform tests to see if you have the flu or another type of respiratory illness.
